You’ve already been sticking to your rigorous exercise regimen of a couple of hours a day of gym sessions and feel great about yourself. Then,
BOOM: life happens
in the form of a new routine: new job, baby, relocation…you name it!
and you no longer can dedicate as many hours in your day just to work out.
And of course, you miss it. You miss the highs you were getting and the feeling of achievement and determination it brought you. And let’s not start talking about the physical deterioration, the loss of the great shape you once fought so hard to get, the loss of strength you now feel when lifting something heavy, the loss of confidence you took for granted along with the mental peace it led to.
Oh, I can go on for hours. These are just some of the benefits of regular exercise and those who engage in it, know them all too well. So what can you do if you don’t have the time? Also, for those who are wondering how to start an exercise regimen with all they’ve got on their plate, I’ve got one simple solution for all: fitness from home.
What is fitness from home and how does it work?
The concept is simple. You buy an online program, whether a downloadable link or a DVD, or both at times; and you do it whenever and wherever suits you from the comfort of your own home. There are plenty of benefits for doing that:
- No rush in traffic to make it for your session
- No overcrowded classes and the danger of stepping on someone’s feet
- No worries on what to wear
- No worries on general appearance
- No recurring gym fees – one-time payment
- No worries on when you’ll find the time: heck, isn’t midnight the new workout trending hour?
And the only downside is that you need to find the space to do it. Now, if you own pets or have small children, then the danger of stepping on someone’s feet or paws, or worse- their heads, is a real thing. Sure, your family will mock your efforts and have a laugh at your expense but watch who laughs out loud in the end when you’re rocking your new bod proudly.
So which home-based fitness program is suitable for you?
That depends on your fitness goals and what is it you like to achieve. That said; there are some great programs out there focusing on your core and whole body so you don’t have to wonder for long. Here, I’ll share some of my experiences with what are labelled the most effective fitness programs to do from home.
And before you ask: no, I don’t own all of them. A couple I borrowed from fellow friends. We do have a rule where we swap DVDs with each other for maximum fitness benefit and minimum cost. Isn’t that what friendship is all about – supporting your fitness and other common goals.
Here are my ‘5 Best Fitness Programs to Do from Home’ that have brought me the best results over the years.
1. The 20 Minute Body by Brett Hoebel: The Trilogy
I love, love Brett! His whole approach cuts right through the excuses of most people as to why they can’t work out or eat right. His whole program is made with 20 minutes in mind and let’s face it: who doesn’t have 20 minutes in their day?
Brett’s trilogy DVD includes 13 workouts on 11 DVDs and focuses on short but very intense exercises to speed up your metabolism and thus, help you get fit faster. It’s fun to do and you start looking forward to hitting play on the DVD player more often than not. You get bonus discs when you order and you also get the option to download the program instead.
2. JILLIAN MICHAELS – 10 Minute Body Transformation DVD
Ah, Jillian! As innocent and beautiful as she looks on the DVD cover, don’t let looks fool you! Her 10 minute workouts are not as easy as you’d think and if you’re a beginner, you’ll realize how long a minute really can be. Now, for someone with a great level of fitness, 10 minutes no matter how intense would not be sufficient. You can then either use it a supplement to your other workout routines or just add more sessions from the DVD to your daily schedule based on the time you have. It is intense and you should expect to sweat but the results are visible in a short time frame. Her Pilates session is by far my favourite.
3. Yoga Burn System for Women DVDs
I have talked about the Yoga Burn System for Women in other reviews here on my blog. When people think of yoga, they think of a slow workout mostly beneficial for toning and stretching. Not Yoga Burn! This was my first, recent DVD program I got and I can’t stop raving about it. Zoe is a brilliant trainer, she’d take a fitness beginner and convert them to a fitness maniac. The results of yoga burn is a sculpted, toned, slimmer body and your only concern will be how to afford buying a new wardrobe after completing her program. Or any of her programs.
She has since released another program, the Total Body Challenge that I still haven’t tried yet but a close friend has and is currently half way through. Her results are incredible. She’s lost two stones and many inches and gained confidence. She can’t stop talking about it or dressing up to show off her new figure. I’m patiently waiting for her to be done so I can get my hands (and legs) on it.
4. Cindy Crawford Fitness DVDs
Remember Cindy Crawford and the supermodels of the 90s? Their shapes and the fact they looked as women should look like or until the skinny trend came into fashion? As a teenager, Cindy Crawford’s fitness DVDs were all the hype. And for a good reason. Her workouts focus on working the whole body and result in increased muscle mass everywhere. I remember when I was doing her ‘New Dimension’ DVD as a teenager; 10 days into following it I was already being asked what I’d changed about my fitness. I still use her stretching sessions before a morning run, there’s no better stretches I’ve found online. The good news is that because the DVD is considered old, the price is way lower than other programs. The results are the same though. Now, if you’re an absolute beginner to exercise and can’t imagine doing her workouts for as long as she does, then do what you can and increase the duration each time you get around to it.
5. Joe Wicks Lean in 15 Workouts
Last but not least on the list – ‘The Body Coach’ social media star. I got this one specifically for my husband to start working out again but I must admit I’m more into it than my husband! It’s brilliant for beginners and Joe explains everything in detail so it’s easy to follow. As you progress through the levels, expect to be challenged. Even with the irregular workouts my partner is putting in, there are still visible results.
And with that, our list comes to an end. Here’s hoping it’ll also be the end of excuses that you don’t have enough time in your day to work out with all these time-saving options you’d just been given.
One little reminder though if you do get any of the DVDs: don’t let them gather dust on your shelves. If your excuse is that you lack some sort of equipment that the DVD calls for, let’s say weights, don’t forget you can improvise with what you’ve at home. Weights can be substituted for bottles of water. A mat can be replaced by a carpet or a blanket. The list goes on. Ditch the excuses and get creative.
Remember to press play and just do it!
P.S. Feel free to share any other DVD fitness programs you and your friends have been getting great results from, we love trying out new programs!
Best of luck,
